XVIII

For Eighteen Visions’ album XVIII, I designed a record jacket that felt classic, simple, and organic. As a member of the band, I built the cover around a new mark made by combining its Roman-numeral forms—an iconic symbol with a subtle pentagram-like suggestion that felt at home in the band’s visual language.

I made the mark by hand in my garage with paint, brushes, and a lot of experimentation, producing roughly forty variations before choosing the final cover. Its imperfect, painterly surface is deliberately held against clean, classic typography.

Inside, the booklet features photographs of altered doll heads, a recurring Eighteen Visions motif dating back to the 1990s. James Hart, our singer and a hairdresser, transformed doll heads from hairdressing school; we also brought objects like these into our stage environment. The images extend the same balance of handmade character and restraint found on the jacket.
